My colleague Mary Ellison and I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the IRA regional conference in Portland, last February. It was windy, with a little nip in the air, but the snow was gone and we actually tromped over some green grass and saw leaves fluttering on the trees. The conference was amazing - we came back with lots of neat information to share. We saw George Shannon - author of one of my favorite children's books, Lizard's Song, Richard Allington, Frank Serafini, Kathy Collins, Leslie Blauman and Danny Brassell - all known for their work in literacy. Mary was great company (although camera shy) and we had fun poking around Portland together.
