Floating down the Li River, Guilin
Guilin is clear air, green hills, clean water and beautiful scenery. If I had to live in China, I would pick Guilin. Our guide there, whose name was "Wei" was justifiably proud of his hometown. On a four hour dinner cruise we saw water buffalo herds and trained cormorants who fished for their masters. We passed sleepy little villages and fended off souvenir sellers who tied their rafts to our boat and then climbed up the sides, waving their trinkets and yelling through the windows. "Close your windows and ignore them," Wei said. "What they are doing is against the law!" When the sellers saw that we were ignoring them, they jumped off our boat, cursing and shaking their fists at us. We ate fish and chicken, provided by local fishermen and farmers who pulled up in small water crafts and sold their live goods directly to the cooks working in the kitchen on the back of our boat. Now that's "fresh" food - no refrigeration needed. For an extra fee you could try "snake wine" with your meal. I passed.
